How to Improve Payment Method Selection in E-commerce?

Payment method selection is the final step before completing a purchase and, simultaneously, the moment when an e-shop can most easily lose a customer. Research from the Baymard Institute shows that even small UX details during the payment selection process can significantly impact order completion rates. What payment options should an e-shop offer, how should they be correctly displayed, and why is it important to adapt the button text based on the chosen payment method? We looked at the most important findings from their research.

Payment Selection is a Critical Moment of the Purchase

The checkout is the final hurdle between the customer and completing the order. This is why research organizations, such as the Baymard Institute, have long focused on analyzing usability in this part of the e-commerce journey. Their research shows that issues during payment method selection can completely halt customers in the buying process.

Interestingly, the visual design of the payment selection itself is not as critical as it might seem. Testing has shown that most users have no trouble navigating various types of interfaces—whether they are radio buttons, cards, or simple lists.

One of the few design solutions that proved problematic is the drop-down menu for payment method selection. Users often overlook them or find them confusing, which is why they are practically no longer used in modern checkouts.

OpiTip: Display available payment methods directly on the checkout page instead of hiding them in drop-down menus. Use clear names and well-known logos of payment services so customers can quickly find their preferred option. It is also advisable to pre-select the most frequently used payment method, which can speed up the payment process and reduce unnecessary decision-making for users.

Lack of Payment Options Can Decrease Conversions

A much larger problem than the design itself is the number of available payment methods. According to research among more than 2,000 online customers, up to 11% of users abandoned the checkout simply because the store did not offer their preferred payment method.

Despite this, approximately 21% of e-shops still do not offer a single alternative payment method beyond basic credit card payments.

From a business perspective, this represents a significant loss of potential orders. Different customer groups prefer different payment methods. Younger customers more frequently use digital wallets and mobile payments, while older generations tend to prefer traditional cards or bank transfers.

Studies also show that offering multiple payment options can increase conversions by approximately 30%, as customers are able to complete the purchase using the method most convenient for them.

Speed and Simplicity of Payment are Decisive

Beyond the availability of payment methods, the simplicity of the process is also vital. In e-commerce, the term "frictionless payment" is often used - referring to payment without unnecessary steps or obstacles.

Interestingly, the form of payment itself can influence customer behavior. Some research suggests that customers are willing to spend more when using digital or mobile payments compared to traditional payment methods.

OpiTip: Minimize the amount of data a customer must fill out during payment. The faster and simpler the process, the higher the chance the customer will complete the purchase. Features like saved payment details, quick mobile payments, or "one-click checkout" can help shorten the entire process and reduce the risk of cart abandonment.

Clear Communication During Payment Reduces Uncertainty

A common problem in checkouts is unclear communication regarding the next step. Third-party payment methods, such as PayPal or Klarna, often redirect the customer away from the e-shop to an external site.

If the button in the checkout still says "Complete Order," for example, the user may be confused—expecting a purchase confirmation but finding themselves on a different website instead. Testing has shown that it is exactly at this moment that many users hesitate or abort the process.

The solution is a simple adjustment of the microcopy in the interface. Instead of a generic button, it is better to use a specific formulation, such as:

  • "Continue to PayPal"
  • "Proceed to payment via Klarna"

This way, the user knows exactly what will happen in the next step.

Checkout Remains One of the Biggest Barriers in E-commerce

The average shopping cart abandonment rate in e-commerce hovers around 70%, with a large portion of these exits occurring specifically during the checkout process.

The main reasons include:

  • Complicated forms,
  • Errors when entering data,
  • Lack of payment options,
  • Or lack of trust in the website.

OpiTip: View the checkout as a strategic part of the user experience. Even small UX improvements, such as a clearer payment method selection or faster forms, can significantly reduce cart abandonment rates and increase conversions.

Payment method selection is a detail that has a major impact on the success of an online purchase. Research shows that the most important factor is not the visual design of the selection itself, but rather the availability of various options and the simplicity of the overall process.

E-shops that offer multiple payment methods, communicate next steps clearly, and minimize complications in the checkout can significantly reduce cart abandonment and increase conversions. In an environment where the competition is just one click away, a good checkout can be the deciding factor for success.
